The universal currency throughout the islands of Terracopia is the Ducat, a gold coin that weighs close to 1/10th of an ounce. Ducats are further divided into Shillings (10 shillings to a Ducat), and then there are also copper Pennies (of which the exchange rate is 100 pennies to a Ducat, or 10 to a Shilling).

While many societies mint their own coinage, nearly everyone accepts or trades in Ducats.

Currency is written in the form of $XX.YY, where the "$" symbol indicates a Ducat amount, "X" indicates a number of Ducats, and "Y" indicates a number of pennies. Whole numbers (e.g., only Ducats), pad out the value with 0s.

Thus, a value equal to 15 Ducats, 3 Shillings, and 5 Pennies would be written as "$15.35", while a value of 8 Ducats (and no Shillings or Pennies) would be written as "$8.00".

[edit] History

The Ducat was created by and is backed by La Banca di Medicia (the Bank of the Medicia), effectively placing the fate of the world's currency in the hands of the Medicia family. The Ducat is also known as the Medician Ducat.
