Orcs are a humanoid species. They are native primarily to Macedonia but may be found throughout all islands within Terracopia. Orcs prefer dry and warm climates but are able to thrive in any climate. Orcs are a player-character species.
[edit] Physiology
Orcs are large, muscular humanoid mammals with skin color that varies among all shades, with pale white being the most common. They typically have thick, straight hair of white color, though all shades are possible. They are capable of growing facial hair and, in fact, the style of facial hair worn by many orcs can signify social status. Orcs have a natural lifespan of 60 years, and reach physical maturity after 15 years.
Orcs have thick, heavy-set brows, with deep-set eyes that come in many shades. They have no special visual abilities.
Orcs possess a slight resistance to Corruption.
[edit] Ecology
Orcs are biologically omnivorous but are primarily carnivorous. They do not typically eat carrion, though they are biologically capable of doing so.
[edit] Society
Orcs organize into clans. Within the individual clans, social position is determined by hereditary caste. Orc society focuses on clan first and caste second - orcs of a high caste will support members of their own clan over members of a higher caste if said orcs are from a different clan. The leader of any clan is known as the Father, and all other members of a given clan are referred to as Children.
Orc society is heavily steeped in ritual and tradition, though not necessarily of a religious nature. The concept of honor is exceptionally important to an orc: the honor of the self affects the honor of the family, which affects the honor of the clan.
Orc young are raised collectively by the clan. Each orc will typically spend between 6 months and a year apprenticed to different members of the clan, thus learning as much as possible about the different responsibilities within the group. At the ceremony of maturity, the orc will choose his or her chosen path, and thus become a journeyman within the clan.
While there are many clans, the largest clans are the Sparta, the Troja, the Minoa, and the Greka.
Orc society abhors slavery due to their previous perception of having been enslaved by Ba'al (see below).
[edit] Religion
In olden times, orcs were beholden to Ba'al. However, around two thousand years ago, there was a revolution in orcish society, where they came to believe that the worship of Ba'al was akin to a self-imposed slavery. The common belief became that worship of the god was a limitation on all orcs, keeping them from growing into the beings that they would ultimately become.
As such, the clans rejected Ba'al - and eventually all gods, choosing instead to rely entirely on their own strengths. Orcs believe in the existence of gods; they just choose not to recognize them.
[edit] Technology
Orcs are considered one of the enlightened species due to their capacity to use technology. They are expert metal workers, but do not typically engage in more modern technologies (such as steam).
[edit] Sorcery
Orcs are middling sorcerers. They believe more in the might of muscle and bone over the might over the mind, and as such, orcish sorcerers are not accorded high degrees of respect within their society.
