Dwarves are a humanoid species. They are native primarily to Catala and Terra Lusa but may be found in small numbers throughout all islands within Terracopia. Dwarves prefer dry, warm, and mountainous regions but are able to thrive in any climate. Dwarves are a player-character species.

[edit] Physiology

Dwarves are short, muscular humanoid mammals with skin color that varies among all shades, with pale white being the most common (many dwarves spend the bulk of their lives underground, and thus carry a genetic melanin deficiency). They typically have thick, straight hair of white color, though all shades are possible. The males are capable of growing facial hair and, in fact, the style of and length the facial hair worn dwarves can signify social status. Dwarves have a natural lifespan of 180 years, and reach physical maturity after 25 years.

Dwarves typically have thick facial feature with eyes that come in many shades. They have slitted eyes which enable them to see in dark locations better than other humanoid species. They have excellent night vision, though most (about 90%) have a form of color-blindness.

Dwarves possess an excellent resistance to Corruption.

[edit] Ecology

Dwarves are biologically omnivorous but are primarily vegetarian, with a diet that consists primarily of various types of mushrooms and moss. They do not eat carrion and are not well-suited biologically to do so.

[edit] Society

Dwarves organize into clans or family lines. Within the individual clans, social position is determined by hereditary family. Dwarf society focuses on family first and clan second.

Dwarvish society is heavily steeped in ritual and tradition, though not necessarily of a religious nature. The concept of honor is exceptionally important to a dwarf: the honor of the self affects the honor of the family, which affects the honor of the clan.

Dwarvish young are raised collectively by the clan. Each dwarf will typically spend between 6 months and a year apprenticed to different members of the clan, thus learning as much as possible about the different responsibilities within the group.

Dwarves do not typically keep slaves.

Dwarves are a militant society. All dwarves must, at some time or another, serve in the clan's military forces.

[edit] Religion

Dwarves practice a form of ancestor worship. They engage in complicated rituals whereby the soul of an ancestor is imbued or trapped within special altars. The elders of a family may then seek advice from the dead.

[edit] Technology

Dwarves are considered one of the enlightened species due to their capacity to use technology. They are expert metal workers - the best possible - and are heavily invested in technologies (such as clockwork and steam).

[edit] Sorcery

Dwarves are fair sorcerers, though this is not a common occupation. They prefer to focus on technology over magick.
